Advanced EMT Clinical Minimums Video

Congratulations!  You have reached the point in your course where the real fun begins.  Below you will find the requirements and documents you will need to complete for your field clinical experience.  Remember, you must thoroughly complete each document for each day you ride a clinical.  You must also ensure that your preceptor signs all documents, to include all clinical log sheets and the Student Clinical Evaluation Form.  Failure to acquire all necessary signatures may result in the clinical date not counting.

Below are the requirements for completion of the Advanced EMT Field Clinicals:

  • You Advanced EMT Field/Clinical time will be a minimum of 32 hours
  • You must accumulate a minimum of 15 Patient Assessments to include:
  • a minimum of 5 pediatric patients (birth - 17 years old)
  • In order to obtain the needed pediatric patient assessments, the student may need to spend time at a pediatric care center. Contact your Instructor or Clinical Coordinator for further information.
  • a minimum of 5 adult patients (18 - 64 years old)
  • a minimum of 5 geriatric  patients (65+ years old)
  • You must complete an electronic Patient Care Report (ePCR) for each Patient Assessment in GEMSIS Elite
  • Please see the ePCR Instructions section below for details
  • You must complete and document the following skills:
  • a minimum of 10 successful IVs
  • a minimum of 10 medications ( must be in the AEMT scope of practice, excluding oxygen and saline flush )
  • You may list ANY medications you administer, however only those in the Advanced EMT Scope of Practice will count toward your minimum of 10.
  • a minimum of 1 BVM
  • You must assess and document patients with the following complaints:
  • a minimum of 1 chest pain assessment
  • a minimum of 1 altered mental status assessment
  • a minimum of 1 dyspnea assessment (pediatric, adult, or geriatric)
  • You must complete a minimum of 3 successful Team Leads ( This is after the other clinical minimums have been achieved and MUST be completed on an ambulance )
  • Thoroughly complete all clinical documentation to include preceptor signatures
  • Must complete a Student Evaluation Form and a Preceptor Evaluation Form for each clinical date
  • At the end of your course, complete a Clinical File Review (Your Instructor will guide you through this process)

Your Instructor should have shown you how to use the electronic documents below to document your clinical experiences.  As you complete each document, assuring all necessary information is entered and ORIGINAL signatures are affixed , save a copy for your records and email a copy to your Instructor.

These electronic forms use Adobe Reader .  If you do not have Adobe Reader on your device, you will need to download the app.  This is essential for completing the fields on the documents and obtaining signatures from your preceptors.  Both Android and iOS app stores carry this app.  It can also be found on the web for download here

GEMSIS Elite ePCR Instructions

ePCR Instructions

  • The Run Number/Incident Number should be the year-your initials, followed by 001, 002, 003, etc., and ending with and "A" for Advanced EMT. For example 2022-BF001A. the next ePCR would be 2022-BF002A, etc.
  • Do not enter the patient's real name. I recommend a name representative of the patient type, such as "Jane Chest Pain", "Donnie Dyspnea",  "Larry Leg Pain", etc.
  • However, you MUST enter the patient's actual date of birth in order to display the patient's actual age, due to Patient Assessments by Age clinical requirements noted above.  (5 Pediatrics, 5 Adults, 5 Geriatrics)
  • Enter all procedures and medications in the appropriate location in the ePCR, as well as in the narrative section.
  • Enter all vital signs in the appropriate location in the ePCR.
  • Print and save an Adobe PDF copy of the ePCR after completion.
    • Using the Adobe PDF copy of the ePCR, yellow highlight all data pertaining to any and all clinical requirements, i.e. patient ages, skills performed, medication administrations, etc., then save this copy for your records, as well as send a copy to your Instructor.

Once you have completed your Clinical In-brief, please complete the acknowledgement form by clicking on or scanning the QR code.  If you have any questions in the future, or if you are uncertain of how to proceed with any aspect of the clinical documentation, you may return here and watch the videos again, or you may contact your instructor.
